A Beginner's Guide to Minecraft

Introduction

Minecraft is what some describe as 8-bit Lego. A sandbox game that centres around placing blocks and building amazing structures, all the while trying to escape Skeletons, Zombies and other monsters.

We at Multiplay offer Minecraft servers from

This guide will cover:

  • Getting the Minecraft software.
  • Connecting to a server.
  • Modifying your server.

This guide is not meant to be a complete guide to setting up your Minecraft server . If you want more information, then please visit our Public Wiki: www.wiki.multiplay.co.uk

Step 1 – Getting the Software

Visit the download page

Assuming you are running a version of Microsoft Windows, you will need to click on 'Minecraft.exe'. Minecraft is completely free to download but you will need to have purchased the game to connect to servers.

Once the software has downloaded, run the executable and the game will launch. You may find it useful to place a shortcut on the desktop (if it hasn't already) or even on the 'Quick Launch' bar. This is entirely up to you.

Step 2 – Connecting to a Server

When you start Minecraft and have logged in with your username and password, the following window will appear:

Right now you are not connected to a server, so let's do this now.

Click on Multiplayer and select Add server. Doing this will add your server to the in game browser so that you can connect quickly.

In the 'Server Name' box enter a name for the server you wish to connect to. In the 'Server address' box enter the IP address of the server (including the port). Once you are finished, click Done.

Now, simply double click on your server name to connect.

Step 3 – Modifying your Server

The most basic settings for your Minecraft server are all stored within the 'server.properties' file. If you have a Multiplay server, this can be found in the Configs section of Clanforge.

The Most common settings you will want to change are:

  • spawn-monster=true/false - This enables or disables monsters
  • allow-nether=true/false - This allows you to choose if people can visit the Nether
  • level-name=world - Change this if you wish to create new world
  • spawn-animals=true/false - Enables or disables pigs, sheep and other animals
  • allow-flight=true/false - Enables or disables flight. If set to false, people flying will be kicked
  • Now you have connected to your server and have changed basic settings. If you would like any help with more advanced settings please contact Multiplay Support.
